This monograph is the first publication to comprehensively describe contemporary Belarusian dialects in Latvia. The monograph consists of two parts. The first part (1/5 of the monograph) describes the whole structure of dialects (phonetics, morphology, syntax, lexicon, phraseology). The state of research, the origin of the dialect on the territory of interest and the classification of dialects are also presented. The second part (4/5 of the monograph) presents a set of phonetically transcribed texts that demonstrate various aspects of speaker life (pre-war life, period of World War II, times of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic and independent Latvia, sociolinguistic situation, field work, work in collective farms, ceremonies, customs etc.). The texts come from all over Latvia, where Belarusian dialects are used. This allows not only to get acquainted with the rich folklore of the region, but also to monitor the language changes (especially the process of Russification) that take place on the territory and are geographically differentiated. The publication includes comprehensive appendices, illustrative maps and summaries in English, Belarusian and Latvian. Thanks to its structure and content, the monograph is beneficial not only for scientists dealing with Baltic-Slavic language border (the process of interaction between Belarusian dialects, Russian, Latvian, Polish and Latgalian dialects), but also for ethnologists and historians. The Belarusian rural culture in Latvia and their history (in the form of so-called oral history) have not been studied yet.
