This monograph offers first comprehensive overview of Bulgarian unofficial literature from the period of socialism. This work focuses on so called desk drawer literature, samizdat and some pieces of confiscated literature – such literary texts which seemed to be dangerous for ideological purity of the communist régime and were confiscated after being published officially. The literary interpretation is followed by a number of quotations from personal diaries, official periodicals and Bulgarian secret police documents. In its historical introduction the book deals with the post-World War II period and establishing of “dictatorship of the proletariat”. Particular chapters are set into the dynamic socio-political contexts of that times. There is also a chapter about the military occupation of Czechoslovakia after 21st August 1968 and its negative impact on the development of Bulgarian culture and literature. The book includes chapters focusing on authors of the so called “discarded” generation of 1980s, whose work would increasingly involve principles of neo-avant-garde shock and some other trends that mirrored post-modern creative approaches.
