This study sheds light on the theme of the Warsaw Ghetto in Polish literature. The central categories of this investigation are Bakhtin’s concept of the chronotope as well as Schmitt’sand Agamben’s theory of the “state of exception”. The surveyed texts range from the 1940s (Andrzejewski, Miłosz) to the 1980s (Rymkiewicz, Błoński), and up to contemporary texts whose authors do not have any personal memories related to the Shoah (Ostachowicz). A further category in this study is “eyewitnessing” which lends Polish literature – the literature of a country that was in the epicenter of the rupture of civilization caused by the Shoah – exceptional importance. By and large, this innovative work adds a number of new aspects to Polish and European Shoah memory studies.
