The book offers a view on the extensive legacy of a Moscow conceptualist Dmitry Alexandrovich Prigov (1940 – 2007). The monograph analyses the author’s poetry, prose, theoretical writing, performances and works of visual art in the light of his lifelong project labelled by his own civic name. By emphasizing his subjectivity, the author paradoxically attempted to escape the biographical reading of his own texts. He sought to reflect on Soviet totalitarianism and its influence on individual speech and action without being trapped in the illusion of his own “truth″. He further developed this strategy with regard to pluralism and mediatization after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Prigov’s (self-)reflexivity and spontaneity continue to inspire younger generations of artists, such as the Pussy Riot collective.
