A synthetic and original work of late eminent Czech scholar in the field of Russian and general linguistics. The work presents a view of history of standard Russian from the position of Prague linguistic school. In the course of history are minutely presented changes in the phonetic and phonological system as well as in the morphological system. The book also gives a close view on the situation in Russian dialects and relations between dialects and standard language. The stylistical stratification of Russian and overall linguistic dynamics, including sociolinguistic aspects, is documented on rich language material.
