The authors try a new methodology for the analysis of so called calques, loan shifts in Czech and Sorbian. Based on diachronical corpora and dictionaries they demonstrate how language contact and „indigenous development“ are interwoven. Two studies analyse the development of the valency of selected verbs. In two further studies the prefixes před-/pśed- and nad- are charecterized from the viewpoint of word formation. In all three languages the authors diagnose an adaptation of the semantical structure of different degree. Therefore, they suggest to integrate calques into the description of word formation instead of a dichotomy between „foreign“ and „indigenous“ word formations.
